A Word From The Head, Rod Gilbert
As a new teacher this year to the SOL team, Chris Martin chaperoned his first SOL field trip. It was an experience that pushed his enthusiasm for his students to a new level - to quote Liz Benigno - “He’s on fire." Below is Mr. Martin’s account of the 7th grade field trip to Heifer International.

Teaching Outside the Classroom

There truly are some lessons that cannot be adequately taught in a school classroom, lessons that will stay with a student for life. Last week’s 7th grade field trip to the Heifer Ranch outside Little Rock, Arkansas was one of those lessons.
Students learned first-hand about the daily struggle to eat and survive in extreme poverty at Heifer Ranch. The facility has several simulated “villages” representing impoverished areas in the U.S. and around the world. Our kids lived in those settings for almost a full day and night, immersed in the experience that one-seventh of the world’s population deals with on a daily basis: lack of enough food to eat, water to drink, or a decent place to live.
Students were assigned to different “villages” representing living conditions in Zambia, Guatemala, Thailand and Tibet, as well as the Appalachian region in our own country. Some students lived in “urban slums” while others experienced what it is like to exist in a refugee camp.
Students in “Zambia” slept on dirt floors inside primitive huts, while those in a Tibetan village slept in “yurts,” or tents. If students found themselves in an urban slum, they experienced sleeping on a brick or concrete floor.
Each group of students were given a basket containing a small supply of food, such as potatoes, carrots, and onion, and maybe even a small bag of rice. Some groups were given control of the villages’ water supply, while others possessed the firewood necessary for all of the villages to use for cooking. Their task? Work together, trade needed essentials and cooperate so all “villagers” could have the chance to make something to eat.
While most villages struggled at first to cooperate and trade with other groups, the students soon began to work together to survive the night. It was inspiring to see leaders emerge and students selflessly serve others. Bonds were formed between 7th graders that had not really known each other at school. Through it all, students began to grasp in a real way what Christ taught us about caring for and looking after the poor and hungry.

Grammar School
6th Grade Matriculation is May 14th
Each year we mark the transition of our 6th grade students from the lower school to the upper school with a Matriculation Service. This year's Matriculation will take place Monday, May 14th at 10:30am during the final School of Logic Chapel for 2011-2012. This chapel will be similar to a baccalaureate service. Our current 6th graders will be welcomed by the 7th and 8th graders, be given a charge by Liz Benigno and Chris Acton, as well as have an opportunity to hear from two of their classmates. At the end of the chapel each student will be presented with a gift from the Grammar School. It is our hope that this occasion will be a special time for our students connecting them with their future classmates and teachers in the School of Logic, encouraging them in their future endeavors, as well as commemorating their journey through the Grammar School.
Ephesians Chapel is May 21st
Please join us Monday, May 21st at 8:30am in the main gym for Grammar School’s Ephesians Chapel. We conclude each year with this special time of recitation and praise to God for the gift of another school year. Hope to see you there!

. . . College Internships
If you are a student, recent graduate or career-changer, you've probably been told "you need to get an internship" or "when are you going to get an internship?" But you may not be entirely sure what one is, or what to expect. The truth is internships come in all shapes and sizes. Whether it's paid or unpaid, for credit or experience, the range of skills that you will gain from an internship job opportunity is great (for more, see InternshipFinder.com).
