A Word From the Head

With the school closure for today and tomorrow, it is obvious that we took a posture of caution. We regret any inconveniences this decision may have caused your families. Based on our knowledge this afternoon, we hope and pray that all will be back to normal soon. At this time we are still scheduled for our Saturday events (baseball game and athletic banquet). We will update our communication regarding weekend events tomorrow afternoon by 5:00 pm.

To restate the situation, as of 7:00pm yesterday evening a Regents student and parent tested positive for flu (possibly Type A influenza). At this time we are awaiting test results to see if this is the North American Flu, also called the Swine Flu. We are listening to the authorities and seeking direction as new information is discovered.

If you have questions about your own health, we encourage you to read the information on the CDC website at http://www.regents-austin.com/cf_enotify/linkforward.cfm?n=143&u=242&m=de&dest=http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/?s_cid=swineflu_outbreak_001  and/or contact your family physician.

We are reviewing our schedules for next week, and currently  have no reason to cancel any events, classes or field trips. Next week the School of Logic students are planning to travel for their annual field trips. We will take all precautions, and hopefully we will enjoy these trips as scheduled.  Thanks for your patience and understanding as we anticipate a speedy return to school.

College Decisions Due Tomorrow!
Your decision of where to attend college is due tomorrow, May 1st. To quote my colleague Peter Van Burkirk: After waiting for months to learn of your acceptances, you have to stop everything that might be going on in your life to focus on choosing a college. The timing isn't great, but you have little choice. You have worked hard to put yourself in the position of being able to make the final choice and no one can blame you for wanting to take full measure of the time available before the May 1 deadline. Nonetheless, you need to act now.

May 1st is not an arbitrary deadline set to ease the anxieties of admission officers. College officials have a very short turn-around time after the enrollment process is completed in which to assign academic advisors, set the academic schedule, complete course registrations and order classroom materials for the coming fall. In addition, they need to make housing assignments, verify financial aid awards, set their operating budgets and set up the billing process for a new group of students. As you can see, May 1st is certainly not any more convenient for colleges than it is for the students they admit.

The bottom line: it is important that you honor the deadlines and requirements that have been placed before you. Choose one school and inform the rest of your decision. Resist the temptation to submit enrollment deposits to three or four or five colleges now so you can make your decision later. Instead, follow your instincts to the place that fits you best and begin to invest in becoming a first-year student at that college.

Watch for the signs around school announcing the latest playoff game and come cheer the Regents Knights on to victory.

Varsity Tennis
Kudos to the amazing doubles team of Carly Smyrl and Morgan Wenske for placing 3rd in State at the tournament in Waco this past weekend. Winning their first 2 rounds was a tremendous accomplishment. The team who defeated them went on to win 1st in State.

Tommy Waldo and Douglas Steinman also went to State for Boys Doubles. Despite a loss in the first round, they were the only team to win more than 3 games against the All Saints team. We also received several compliments regarding good sportsmanship on and off the court. What a great reflection of our community and school!
