Speech
School of Logic (SOL) Speech
Students will engage in oratorical skills that will prepare them for the rigors of the School of Rhetoric and "life beyond". Listening skills, modern oratory, poetry/prose, and impromptu speaking will be explored. Students will have the opportunity to compete in Private Schools Interscholastic Association events.
School of Rhetoric (SOR) Speech
Units will include: choosing effective language, methods of delivery, audience analysis, group dynamics, evaluating sources of persuasion, interpreting the presentations of others, non-verbal communication, parliamentary procedure, oral interpretation of prose and poetry, meeting special speaking situations, and a study of various movements in American and world history through the historical rhetoric of the times. Mastery of these units will be demonstrated in the presentation of speeches in four speech categories-to inform, to convince or persuade, to demonstrate, and to inspire.
